B & RElectrical Appliance RepairsBERKHAMSTED

How it works

Four steps, no call centre in any of them.

There is no booking portal, no automated triage and no rota of subcontractors. You ring the mobile, you speak to Brian, and Brian is the person who arrives at the door. This is what happens in between.

  1. 01

    Ring and describe the fault

Call the mobile and say what the appliance is doing — the noise, the error code, the puddle on the floor. Have the make, model and serial number to hand if you can find them; on most machines they are on a sticker inside the door or around the back.

  2. 02

    A visit is booked

You get a day and a window, not a twelve-hour wait by the door. Berkhamsted, Tring and Hemel Hempstead are on the doorstep, so local calls are often seen quickly.

  3. 03

    Diagnosis in your kitchen

The appliance is tested and stripped down far enough to find the actual cause rather than the obvious symptom. You get told, in plain English, what has failed and what it would take to put right — including when it is not worth putting right.

  4. 04

Repair, or a part on order

If the part is on the van, the job is finished there and then. If it is not, it is ordered from an authorised supplier and a return visit is arranged — and the appliance is checked over properly before it is signed off as working.

Repairs happen in your house

Washing machines, dishwashers, dryers, cookers and storage heaters are repaired where they stand, wherever the fault allows it. Smaller items such as vacuum cleaners are the usual exception.

Common parts travel in the van

A range of everyday spares is carried, so a good number of jobs are finished on the first visit. Anything less common is ordered through authorised resellers rather than bought on price alone.

You get told if it is a write-off

The point of getting someone experienced to look is to find out quickly whether it is a part or the end of the machine — not to be sold a repair that costs more than a replacement.

Make the call short

Three things worth having in front of you.

None of it is compulsory — but a call that starts with the model number and an error code very often ends with the right part already on the van.

  • 01

    The rating plate

Make, model and serial number. Inside the door, around the door frame, or on the back panel. Photograph it on your phone.

  • 02

    The error code

Anything on the display — E18, F05, a pattern of flashing lights — plus when in the cycle it appears.

  • 03

    What it is actually doing

The noise, the smell, the puddle, the point in the programme where it stops. Symptoms narrow a fault down faster than guesses.
